Recommendations for Welded Stainless Steel Structures

Thickness of Stainless Steel Structures Designed for Welding

For stainless steel material, it is recommended to use thickness of at least 1 mm and in sheet metal and pipes. In large pieces, thicknesses of 2 mm are recommended to avoid drag. Stainless Steel Alloys and Their Compatibility with Welding

Most stainless steel alloys can be welded without any problems. From the most common alloys 304/304L and 316/316L you should choose blanks according to availability. The selection and availability of sheet blanks and tubes should be checked on the websites or catalogs of SSAB, Tibnor, Flinkenberg, Stén and Kimet or Sandvik.

In cast stainless steel parts, material pores and internal stresses can cause problems. In most cases with preheating and the right welding equipment these can be avoided.

To prevent corrosion it is advisable to use correctly alloyed wire when welding. We stock wide variety of stainless and acid resistant alloys to ensure a fast delivery time for our services.

The most common welded alloys are AISI 3014 and 304L (1.4031, 1.3497, 1.4306) and AISI 316 and 316L (1.4401, 1.4404). In addiotion we weld for example AISI 309S (1.4833), duplex (2205/31803/1.4462) and high-temperature 253 MA (1.4835/S30815) steel.
